PACIFIC REGION - California

The Intertribal Agriculture Council (IAC) supports Tribes and individual Tribal producers in the region by increasing access to federal programs through its initiatives, fostering economic development, and advancing parity for Native communities.

ABOUT

The Pacific California Region holds a unique role in Indian agriculture shaped by historical challenges that California Tribes faced under policies like the General Allotment Act of 1887 and the Rancheria Act of 1958, which undermined Tribal sovereignty and led to widespread land dispossession. IAC supports California Tribes and Tribal producers through a wide range of programs and initiatives including direct on-the-ground technical assistance with USDA resources, economic development, programs for youth and young professionals, and natural resources programming in collaboration with USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to promote sustainable land management practices, including soil, water, and ecosystem conservation, while enhancing agricultural productivity. By fostering Tribal self-determination, strengthening infrastructure, and preserving cultural ties to the land, IAC ensures California Tribes have the tools and opportunities to steward their natural resources and build resilient, thriving communities.
